SUMMARY:A Masterclass in Soil Health Extension Training Practical Approaches\, Tools and Resources for building Capacity in Soil Health for Resilient Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:From Knowledge to Hands-On Action: CCRAF to Host Soil Health Masterclass at CWA 2026\n\n\n\nWhat if farmers and extension professionals could assess important aspects of soil and water health using simple\, affordable and locally accessible tools? \n\n\n\nAt Caribbean Week of Agriculture 2026\, the Caribbean Climate Responsive Agriculture Forum (CCRAF) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) will take CCRAF’s knowledge-to-action mission from discussion to hands-on practice through a special interactive session: \n\n\n\nA Masterclass in Soil Health Extension Training: Practical Approaches\, Tools and Resources for Building Capacity in Soil Health for Resilient Agriculture \n\n\n\nThe in-person session will take place on 📅 Wednesday\, September 30\, 2026 | 🕑 10:45–12:00 PM Jamaica Time | 📍 Ocean Coral Spring Resort\, Trelawny\, Jamaica | 🤝 In person \n\n\n\nHealthy soils and effective water management are fundamental to productive\, resilient agricultural systems. Yet farmers and extension professionals across the Caribbean do not always have ready access to affordable and practical tools for assessing soil health and water conditions at the farm level. \n\n\n\nLearning by doing\n\n\n\nThis Masterclass has therefore been designed as a practical and participatory learning experience. Rather than simply hearing about soil health\, participants will have an opportunity to see\, handle and apply practical soil and water assessment approaches. Importantly\, the approaches emphasize affordable\, locally available and easy-to-use tools and materials\, helping make soil health assessment more accessible to farmers\, extension officers and agricultural communities. \n\n\n\nLaunching tools to take the learning further\n\n\n\nThe Masterclass will also serve as the official launch of the IICA Soil Health Training and Diagnostic Kit\, developed to support farmers and extension officers in conducting practical field-based soil health and water management assessments using accessible and affordable tools. The session will also launch the following resources; Soil Health Training & Diagnostic Toolkit Manual and Climate-Smart Agriculture: A Handbook for Trainers. These resources and initiatives are intended to ensure that the learning does not end when the CWA session ends. The Soil Health Kit and supporting knowledge products are designed to be used and replicated beyond the workshop at community and national levels. \n\n\n\nTranslating knowledge into action\n\n\n\nThe Masterclass reflects a central principle of CCRAF’s work: knowledge creates greater value when people can apply it. \n\n\n\nAttending CWA 2026? Come ready to participate. Get your hands in the soil\, test practical approaches\, exchange experiences and leave with ideas and resources you can take back to your farm\, institution or community. \n\n\n\n🌐 Learn more about CWA 2026

SUMMARY:ADOPT Caribbean: Soil Health for Climate Resilient Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:CCRAF at CWA 2026: Translating Caribbean Knowledge and Experience into Climate Action\n\n\n\nThe Caribbean Climate Responsive Agriculture Forum (CCRAF) will be at the 20th Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) 2026 in Jamaica\, continuing its mission of translating knowledge into action and bringing practical Caribbean experiences in climate-smart agriculture into an important high-level regional space. \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, September 30\, 2026\, from 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM Jamaica time\, CCRAF and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) will convene the in-person technical discussion “ADOPT Caribbean: Soil Health for Climate-Resilient Agriculture” at the Ocean Coral Spring Resort\, Trelawny\, Jamaica. \n\n\n\nHealthy soils are fundamental to resilient agricultural systems\, food security\, climate adaptation and sustainable rural livelihoods. Across the Caribbean\, however\, soil degradation\, declining fertility\, erosion\, drought\, flooding and other climate-related pressures are increasing the vulnerability of farmers and food systems. \n\n\n\nThe session will draw on experiences and lessons from ADOPT Caribbean: Soil Health for Climate-Resilient Agriculture\, an initiative implemented by IICA\, funded through the New Zealand Government’s Climate Smart Agriculture Initiative\, as part of its contribution to the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA). The initiative was implemented in Guyana\, Jamaica\, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines to strengthen climate-smart agricultural practices\, improve soil health management and build capacity for agricultural greenhouse gas monitoring. \n\n\n\nThrough demonstration plots\, technical exchanges\, capacity building and stakeholder engagement\, ADOPT Caribbean has explored practical approaches including alternate wetting and drying in rice systems\, composting and organic amendments\, mulching\, minimum tillage\, cover cropping and improved nutrient management. \n\n\n\nBringing together other experiences from across the Caribbean\n\n\n\nImportantly\, the CWA discussion will broaden the exchange by also highlighting experiences and lessons learned from two additional projects implemented by IICA that were funded through the New Zealand Government’s Climate Smart Agriculture Initiative\, as part of its contribution to the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA). \n\n\n\nAdvancing Climate Smart Agricultural Practices in Dominica and St. Lucia to Increase Production and Mitigate Greenhouse Gas Emissions\, which brings experiences from efforts to advance climate-smart agricultural practices while addressing production and agricultural GHG emissions; and CAP-BAHAMAS: Growing a Stronger Goat and Sheep Sector\, bringing an additional perspective from the Caribbean livestock sector. \n\n\n\nTogether with ADOPT Caribbean\, these initiatives allow the conversation to draw on experiences spanning Guyana\, Jamaica\, St. Vincent and the Grenadines\, Dominica\, Saint Lucia and The Bahamas and different agricultural production systems. \n\n\n\nAt CWA 2026\, the discussion will therefore move beyond individual projects to consider the bigger regional picture: What have we learned? What is working? How can lessons be adapted across countries and production systems? And how do we translate this growing body of Caribbean knowledge and experience into action at scale? \n\n\n\nThis is at the heart of CCRAF’s knowledge-to-action mission — creating spaces where farmers’ experiences\, science\, evidence\, technical knowledge\, policy and partnerships come together to support practical action for a more climate-resilient Caribbean agricultural sector. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will contribute to regional dialogue on soil health\, sustainable land management\, climate-smart agriculture\, agricultural GHG monitoring\, resilient livestock systems\, innovation and opportunities for scaling climate action. ADOPT Caribbean itself was designed to foster regional dialogue and collaboration among policymakers\, researchers\, farmers\, extension officers\, development partners and regional institutions. \n\n\n\nAttending CWA 2026? Join CCRAF and partners as we connect experiences from across the Caribbean and move from knowledge to action — from lessons learned to solutions scaled. \n\n\n\nLearn more at the CWA 2026 website.
